TANNING METHODS

Submitted by CODY BRYANT on 6/30/00. ( kodiak@ourtownusa.net ) 198.243.53.187

I am currently using Lutan-F to tan deer hides for mounting. I have had success with this system for the most part. I was wondering if there is another tanning system that is more widely used and works better than Lutan-F. I have watched many videos and followed the instructions to a "T", but I am still having problems with minor hair slippage. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cody it probally isn't your taning agent doing this. Slippage starts because of the way the hide is prepaired pior to the tanning. Ex. If a client keeps his deer head for a week and then askes you to mount it then it will have slippage.
Bruce Rittel has some good info on tanning along with Mark at Knobloch's. I like and use both of their tans and never had any slippage with them. Good luck

Hey Cody, one of the things I was taught was to make sure after every time you flesh and tan a deer make sure you clean your area very good with a anti-bacteria cleaner (lysol etc.) All it takes is alittle bacteria to cause problems with slippage. This has helped me hopefully it will help you!
