Both Magazines are great! I have been getting both of them for the last 13yrs. They, as well as American Taxidermist are all great magazines. I would contact relatives and area taxidermist to see if they come across something extra that they might be willing to let you practice on. Depending on the laws in your area you might also be able to buy some specimans once you feel comfortable with your ability. I'm sure there are others out there who have more ideas on this so I'll step aside and let them answer thanks

Hi Tim,
first question:
check with a local taxidermist and ask if he has some extra specimens that you could buy to practice on. (You really don't know if he'll be friendly or not. if he isn't willing to help, don't worry about it, just go to the next one).(If you encounter rudeness, don't let it discourage you! some taxidermist are secretive and defensive about their business, but not all of us are that way). Anyway, you also have the option of buying specimens through this forum.(I'm sure you could get a few squirrels or something like that pretty cheap--that might hold you over till hunting season).

Second question-- If you could only get one, I'd go with Taxidermy Today--even though Breakthrough is bigger, you get 6 issues of TT, and only 4 with Breakthrough, therefore your annual page count is higher with TT. also, Breakthrough devotes a certain amount of space to carving instead of taxidermy.
they are both great Magazines, but if you have to start with one, make it Taxidermy Today. (maybe the parents could buy you a "birthday subscription" to both).

Good Luck
Dave

Hello Tim,

I always have a supply of extra critters and work close to your area.
If you need something to practice on email me and I can get it to you. I'm a narcotics Officer in your area and I work the graveyard shift, so if your parents or willing to meet me at such a late hour, I can help you out, no charge.

Tim:
You might also wish to contact your local conservation officer, zoo, animal farm, or pet shop. Let them know what you're doing and ask if they too would provide you with specimens. You'll never know unless you ask. Good luck!
