Shaved too thin!

Submitted by Damon on 8/28/00. ( GEngel039@aol.com ) 152.163.188.68

I recently shaved a hide on my new flesher, and realized a bit too lat that I had shaved it a bit too thin in a couple places (hair coming out through the flesh side). It has already been home tanned (Lutan F) after pickeling in Safetee acid.
Is there anything I can do to keep the hair from falling/pulling out on the finished mount? I was thinking of spreading Super glue on the hide side before mounting, but was unsure of the reaction/bonding with the tanning oil. Any other ideas?
This is my own personal mount, by the way. Thanks for any help!

Forget the SuperGlue

Damon,
SuperGlue crystalizes over time and will defeat your entire purposes. Mount your cape as you normally would, but insure that you do two things: (1) DO NOT TAXI the hide with your hands. Use an upholstery tool to make all adjustments, and (2) use a quality hide adhesive (I obviously prefer an epoxy base one) over 100% of the manniken. Then as the glue dries, it will secure any hair that is simply hanging on to the pores in the cape. Once the glue dries, the hir will become a permanent part of the manniken. Also, don't brush the hair, smooth it down with a wet hand GENTLY.

What ever you do, don't put any kind of glue on it because it will turn rock hard after the glue dries. If the areas are small and real bad, cut them out. If you think they are too big to cut out the only thing I can recommend is being really careful and proceed with mounting. I would'nt recommend any tape or things alike because the hide paste must be able to get in contact with ends of the hair to lock them in place once it dries. As long as you are not missing patches of hair you won't have a problem, you won't notice a few hairs missing, just be careful not to pull on those areas until the paste grabs ahold and goodluck.

Same goes here, Bill. Great minds think alike? Probably more like a blind pig finding an acorn on rare occasions, huh? LOL

Why didn't I think of that!

Duh! I guess I overlooked the most obvious thing--hide paste!
I wasn't thinking along those lines (hide paste holds the HIDE in place, but what will hold the hair?...)and didn't see the forest for the trees! For what it's worth, yes, I am a blonde!
Thanks, guys, for your patience with these "Bang-your-head-againt-the-wall-obvious-answer" questions, and the advice!

been there, done that...

My first try at a fleshing machine got so thin you couldn't the inside from the outside. I covered the mannikin as usual with hide paste and spread some on the flesh side of the hide. Be careful handling it and it will seal just fine (it was my personal deer too). Good luck!
