preserved golden trout ruined in basement

After preserving my trout in WASCO wet/dry bird/fish preservative for 4 to 5 hours, I placed the skin mount on a table in my basement to dry. Two days later it was covered in mold. Our basement usually stays dry but due to heavy rain was slightly damp. Could the moisture have caused this or was there a problem with my preservative or process? I have two more trout (1 golden & 1 brown) to do and don't want to ruin them too! What do you suggest for skin mounting?

I'm not sure of the cause of your problem, be one solution would be
to "fan dry" your fish. simply place the fish in front of a small fan
(the fan should be positioned to blow in the fish's mouth) it should only take a day to dry your fish.
with the moisture removed, you shouldn't have anymore problems with mold(as long as you keep it dry)

you can take the fish that's already mounted and quickly wash it with water and whatever product removes mold(maybe lysol?), then re-pose and follow the above procedure to dry. it should be fine.

good luck
Dave

Remember in grade school science when you stuck a piece of bread under
your bed or in a dark place to grow mold? same thing. Keep a light
on and you will slow down and prevent mold from growing.
