Back to mouth finishing...

Thanks to all that responded. Yes, this was a great deal, VERY cheap. And it's not like they were huge fish. ( 3.5-4.0 pounders) I can see where I could learn to do this. So my question was more on the "how" to do it side. Like what clays are best? Can Bondo be used? The rest of the fish is outstanding, just the mouths look funny, ya know?

Epoxy

For a hole in the throat, I use an epoxy sculpting compound. It doesn't crack, has good adhesion, and accepts paint well. If the hole is deep, it may be helpful to tear small pieces of paper, thin paper that packs well such as in a phone book, and fill to the top, finish with the epoxy. Bondo may work if no sculpting is required, but that's probably not the case. Water based clay will crack and fall off. As far as paints go, taxidermy paint works best for me, such as hydromist. This may be an area that an artist brush can be used with good results.
Normally the hole in the throat is fixed before mounting by stapling or sewing from the inside.

Chris
