We live near the Pyrenees in South West France and a friend's young son collects animal skulls in the mountains and has asked if I can find out how to treat them so that they are clean of all extranious material. His mother is quite keen to know the answer too!

MIKE,
THE SKULLS CAN BE CLEANED USING SAL SODA WHICH IS A PRODUCT THE SALLIE DAHMES USES FOR SKULL CLEANING AND IS SOLD BY WASCO Supply. HOPES THIS HELPS...
I do it the dirty, but cheap way if its a small skull all you need is a plastic bucket, ziplock bag and nature will do the rest.Put whole head in ziplock seal and put 2 small holes near top of bag, place in bucket then put in woods so you dont have to smell this stinky process.P.S. I put a lid on bucket and drill a hole the size of a quarter on top, this keeps other animals from messing with the head. Now what is going to happen in the apx. 2 weeks that its in this bucket is the fly's will deliver maggots and every thing will be gone exept for bone and teeth. That is what the bag is for to catch the teeth.Once skull is cleaned soak in peroxide pick up at any store for less than $1.00.Soak for 2 hours.Let sit and dry in sun for 1 hour. Then pick up some mod/podge at your local craft store and paint on to strengthen and seal it dries clear. If its a big head[skull] you might want to use a garbage can or some type of cage.works best doring hot days.
