Sally D. technique

I've read some of the old posts on video selection but still have
a question. I want a video that shows techniques such as hand fleshing and tanning without all the high end tools and equipment. (I will only have the basics such as scalpel, ear opener, tanning oils, etc).

I've read some good comments on Sallie's "A to Z" video. But I see it uses Lutan F method, which I've not yet read up on. Should I try this method/video anyway and try to mimic THIS video for my first time? Or does it concentrate on fleshing machines and methods beyond my means? Sallie's video is from WASCO, which also has the Breakthrough manual I plan to order.

Or the alternative, I've considered two video's from McKenzie: "Fleshing & Tanning Basics" by Mike Gullis/Phil Helms, and also "Whitetail Mounting Basics" by Dennis Behn. The only problem with ordering from McKenzie is they don't offer the Breakthrough Manual. (I'm on a budget and would like to avoid multiple shippings if I can).

The tape I already have is from Van Dyke, "Gamehead Mounting", which used tanning oils. That video was old and poorly done but It did give me the basic principles.

Any comments from you fella's who have seen these video's would be appreciated. Again, I'm looking for one sound method to mimic for fleshing/tanning myself.

Thanks again.

Im pretty sure you can substitute Rittels EZ100 in place of the lutan if you needed to. I think that the lutan method is as easy as any of the tans out there. I just happen to prefer the Rittel product. Basically, your choices are paint on tans, or immersion tans. Id have to say go ahead and learn the immersion tan, and be further ahead.

I just so happen to have both of those videos you mentioned and the Breakthrough manuals. They are both very good videos and both have good quality. For a complete study I would recommend Sally's A to Z. However you have to be flexable. She does use a fleshing machine to thin the capes but you can use a mini flesher or knife or after you have it pickled run it over to a freindly taxidermist with a fleshing machine and let him show you how it;s done. One other tip I would like to mention is, Follow the directions on the chemicals you are using! Don't go by what the viedos say because they do not always agree. It is safest to follow the manufactures directions. Sally uses acid bath crystals, I use safety acid. Sally uses lutan F and so do I but be carful with that stuff it is a dangerious chemical. Anyway what I'm saying is that the A to Z video is great and complete but you can substitute your own methods.

Thanks

Thanks for the response guys. I contacted Rittels and their service was excellent. I will be placing some orders later this fall. I plan to use their products and will substitute some methods like you suggest. My "A to Z" video and Manual are ordered and I guess all I have to do is read up on and see fleshing by hand and I'll be on my way. I'm sure once I see it done, and practice, it will all come together for me. -Jim.
