Terry,
Why are you salting a hide if you are going to use DP? You're defeating the purpose of DP. Your epidermal losses may be attributed to this practice. Just wash the cape off, flesh and DP.

Using DP to Aid Fleshing

You can cape a deer, wash the cape, and then wipe the flesh side of the cape with a dry towel to remove as much moisture as possible and rub DP into the flesh side. Wait a few minutes and flesh. DP will make it easier to flesh either with knife/scalpel or fleshing machine. Hand flesh the face area and turn/pare eyes, ears, lips, and nose. As George said, you can now apply DP and mount. If you don't have time to flesh, and need to freeze, or if you've completed fleshing, and need to freeze, you can add NO MORE than 20-25% salt to DP and rub into the cape, and then freeze. This will make it easier to thaw and flesh once it's removed from the freezer. Just wash the cape prior to final DP and then mount.
