Frist i would like to say this is a great place.A person can learn alot just by reading the questions and responce`s.But i read a responce that has upset me very much about the schools, and those who atend them.It said that MOST who atend are on welware and workers comp case`s that really dont wont to be there. Climbing trees around power line has been my life for 17 years now.Two months ago i was shocked by 12000 volts, and may never get to climb again. And have been thinking of trying to atend a school for Taxidery.Since i was a kid I always wanted to be a taxidermist.I have asked the taxidermist around here to teach me,there is only two and both have a back log of over a year. But not willing to to teach a newbe.Although i dont think i will ever be able to aford the school, i beleave it would be a good start. My point is this, not every one that go`s to the schools is some sort of low life.Everyone needs help sometimes and i thought taxidermy would help keep a hard working honist man off welfare and do something to help suport his faimly

I was in the same situation you were in. I found ads in the back of FIELD & STREAM for taxidermy catalogs. I'M sure all catalogs have videos but the one that i found several beginner videos was [a supply company]. IF You want anymore info, email me

Ken,
I am self-taught and have been studying taxidermy for over ten years, I have never talked to another taxidermist except for e-mail via this forum (this forum to me is like a taxidermy encyclopedia). I feel that If I had gone to a taxidermy school I would have been at the level I am now a few years ago. I did it the hard way.
Going to a taxidermy school is a good option, but some of the books, and videos that are out now-a-days are incredible learnig resources. With books and videos and this forum (forum as a trouble shooting tool)and the will to learn, you could be pretty good fairly fast.
Well there's my two cents worth.

P.S. You can always find money for school (pell grant, student loans etc...)

Self taught is OK

My husband taught himself because that was the best way he learned. He got books and videos and a lot of dedication. Maybe you could intern and work under or rather with another taxidermist - convince them that their turn around time is going to be less if you work with them.

Schools & self Taught...

In Respeonse to the original post by Ken,

I went to Taxidermy school earlier this year. I was in class with 10 other people from all different backgrounds and parts of the country. Myself, I am a former construction business owner, I worked, 14hr days and mostly 7 days a week. I couldnt do the work anymore due to medical problems. I was on medicine for a full year that make you feel like you are in full stage flu 24/7...when I got off them, I decided to go to Taxidermy School, because my main passions in life has always been fishing and hunting. I have been a recipient of government assistance, and can tell you that In my Taxidermy class I wasn't the only one...But the thing was, We All, wanted to be there.

There hasnt been one second in my life since getting sick that I regretted going to Taxidermy School, and never will be. I am at the point in taxidermy where I can compete with people in my area that have been in the business 20 years more than me. And make thier work look bad. Thats not my intention, but in fact, I guess my point is...Don't believe 'everything' you read', Because, I am living proof, that... "most people dont want to be there" is Bull...Most people wouldnt spend the money to go, and to get started afterwards, if they didnt want to be there.

My guess Is "Most of the people" You were refering to, do exist and do plot to screw "The Man"...But Most of us are legit, and better off with professional education from a legit School, with knowledgeable instructors. Books and Videos work, and can be a great learning tool, I have some myself, but they dont compare to a physical instruction by knowledgeable instructors. The only trick is to find a school with such instructors, that you can count on your money going to a quality education. My advise is to examine and visit as many different schools as possible before going, find the one thats right for you...
