Beatin' a dead horse, European mount questions

Submitted by SK on 12/6/00. ( rkba@gcnet.com ) 206.252.184.8

Sorry to bring this subject up, butI've searched this site and read all I could find about this project, seems as though everyone has a slightly differnt method. I've got the skull all boiled out, boiled a little too long in fact and it started to come apart, super glue sould take care of that. Found the peroxide etc at a local beauty suppy place, they have 20%,30% & 40%. I have a bottle of 40, do I need to dilute it? do I soak the entire skull or could it be sprayed on with a spray bottle? There is still some dark colored stuff way back in the nasal cavity I can't get out, along with a few pieces of gristle in some cavities. Does all this need to be removed?
Thanks for your patience and allowing me to beat this dead horse one more time!

After I get the brains eyes and most of the flesh off, I boil in water with sal soda added for 20 to 30 minutes, the meat turns to jello and comes off easily, I then put the skulls in a container and wrap with a towel saturated with 3% peroxide (small brown bottle) buy several there cheap! and cover that with plastic so it don't evaporate, in a couple days set the skull in a sunny spot and it'll turn snow white. hope I helped,...Dan

If you still have dark spots mix 40 vol with basic white(get at beauty supply also)make a paste and paint it on then wrap in plastic bag and let sit 1hr then re wet it with 40 vol 2 more times let it sit 2or3 hrs then rinse clean and let dry then spray with clear lacqure (skull only)

Thanks!

Got it done, thanks to those who responded on this board and by e-mail. It looks OK for a beginner I suppose, I used the pasted method and let it sit overnight. It appears I either made the stuff too thick or left in on too long or both because it came out powdery looking in places, not smooth & shiny. I re-boiled it and scrubbed it as hard as I dared with a brush but the darn stuff just won't come off. I guess next time I do one I will have learned from my mistakes!
