Brandon,as with any type knife for fleshing,it is imperative to keep it sharp as possible.Over the years ive tried various ways to keep my fleshing knives sharp, the easiest way is a little knife sharpener I found of the internet. It looks like two warshers mounted on a black plastic stand, you run the blade through the two warshers about 5 times ,and its razor sharp. It cost about 6.00 and will last for years!Hope this helps.

Is it a 2 handled knife used on a beam?

If it is you do not want it sharp. As far as other knives go you may want them
sharp like B.S.Rhea says. But for a beaming knife you are basically
just pushing the flesh off.
