Up to date sewing procedure?

Submitted by Chuck B. on 12/25/00. ( ) 205.188.208.168

I am a beginner and took some great advise to use videos to learn with. The video that I purchased used a process of punching holes in the skin on the Y incision and all the way down the back, then sewing with a baseball stitch style. Is this method old and out dated? Maybe I didnt purchase a recent enough video. I just want to learn the latest trends and techniques so I can be as good as possible! Thanks for any advise you can offer!

I'm not sure I'd call it outdated, but it's certainly an unnecessary pain in the ass.

If you are mounting whitetail or smaller, and you flesh properly, you shouldn't have any problems sewing the incision without punching holes.

maybe that method is handy on big critters like moose or buffalo, but not for your average mounts.

Good Luck

Thin it first

I just sewed up a shiras moose with a 000 glovers and art sinew thread. If you tan the hide and thin it punching a needle through it is easy. If you use DP then yes it is harder to poke a needle through although if you flesh it it will be easier.

Sewing

Chuck,
The method you speak of is not "old" as much as it is the method used by a supply company of questionable integrity. I've seen the tape. Prepunching holes is a waste of time and often leads to puckering of the cape. Because the holes are perpendicular to the cape, a thread will naturally "pinch" the hide. A baseball stitch (some people use a single needle and thread, I use 2 just like they do on baseballs) is best done by starting the needle back from the under edge of the hide and pushing the needle through the hair side RIGHT AT THE HAIRLINE. This pulls the epidermal layer with hair down and under the next stitch. Many of us still "malletize" the hide after the stitch is complete. A small ball peen hammer or tack hammer works great in seating the seam down flat.

Roofmiester; I never knew it was called malletizing

Really never knew what to call it.

Hum, maybe Ken should put a definitions area on this site.

Malletized my forehead last year, forgot aboout that 21 ounce framing hammer on top of the ladder, well until I moved the ladder. I then was for sure malletized./

So THAT explains it.

udderstand it. Yep I cant use spell check, I cant spell fur crap either, I dont really give a care about spelling, something to do with seeing L's as 7's and S's look like ates. On top of not being aloud to larn typing in skool. But ya knows, I am fairly good with wood work und the like.

So pardon my P.P. Spelling. If ya do I will over look your one fault. Arrogance. john Sea

I was fairly good at spelling in school. Math however was another story. I am very thankful that we use letters, instead of numbers on this Forum! I make spelling errors frequently, but I utilize the spell check, because I feel that whether I like it or not, my writings are an extension of me, and therefore they will be viewed and assessed by others. I don't know how to use it in this forum, so I type it in a mail document. It is then copied, pasted, and submitted.

Spelling errors can be funny and endearing. Spelling, grammar, and speech are tools that we can use to our advantage. If I have that option, I will use it because I want to put my best foot forward. Oh perhaps I just want it to look good... before I insert it in my mouth... Truth be told now! :-) I would not want to cheat a mount, so why would I want to cheat myself? I do appreciate proper spelling, and since it is better to give than receive... I'll try to do my best.

Please remember... Everyone makes mistakes.

P.S. I do have a lisp sometimes, SERIOUSLY! Personally, I think it is Hysterical! I have worked on this, and now can usually perform the trouble words. Enthusiastic, Thistle, Zither, as well as a few others. It has provided me with many a chuckle! I do still have "a relapse" by times. I hope I did not offend you in any way. I just thought it was funny... especially because I had already read in other posts that you are aware of spell check. You aren't the only person to disregard spell check. I just find it curious when an individual doesn't choose to use it. But then... isn't most everything curious? LOL! !EYB

P.P.S. That "Malletizing" thing is a very good tip. Thanks Peeps (Peoples)!
