Baseball stitch help!

Submitted by Earl VanBramer on 12/28/00. ( earl_vanbramer@ti.com ) 192.94.94.1

I just purchased a beginners kit for mounting a deer head. So far so good I think! But read further on it the instructions that came with the kit it say to sew the cut you made up the back of the neck and "y'd" to the antlers with the baseball stitch but it does not show me how to do a baseball stitch. I need some HELP!

Baseball Stitch

Earl, The baseball stitch is very simple. Just push your needle through the skin side of the cape and out the hair side. Then go back into the skin side on the other side of the seam and bring it out the hair side - then repeat all the way down the seam. Place your stitches about 1/4 inch apart, and try to keep the hairs from getting caught in the stitch. If you don't, the hair will stick up on your seam. Good Luck!

Pretty Simple

Just start the needle under the hide and bring it out right at the hair line, then on the other side do the same thing. Your always starting the stitch on the under side and bringing it out the hair side.

Thanks

Thanks Bruce and Dan!

Why not the other way?

When you do facial, detailed repairs, don't you work from the inside? Then aren't you stitching from the outside in? I do! I also stitch the incision the same way, outside in, hair side to inside. It seems that I can regulate the stitch depth better that way. Does it make a real difference, or is it just how you get used to sewing? Comments?

Yeah!

ood question, Dan. I pretty much do the same thing. The only down side of working from the outside in is that the thread tends to want to grab the hair and pull it into the hole, which means you spend as much time fishing hair out of the stitches as you do actually sewing. I'm definitely interested in hearing further pros/ cons on this one.
