My dad has a 16 point he shot in the 60's. He could'nt mount it,times were tough. The horns are in good shape, there just white. I would like to restore or bring back the color to them and mount it for my father. I went in the Archives and found somthing about Antler Stain #2. But will this work on antlers that have never been prepared. I am a Beginner. This will be my first deer head mount. Any info or wisdom on this matter will be APRE. THANKS ALOT !

You can go to your local hardware store and get some puritain pine and some walnut stain. Put it on light color first let it dry some, polish it up some then apply walnut to darken or highlight some spots. Then polish it again and then use a matte sealer over the antlers and you should have a set thats looks like new.

Try instant coffee it works good look at a set of antlers that have good color and just rub instant coffee on them(mixed with water of course)until you get the color you want.

Unless they have been outside they be naturaly light in color.

Alnters can very even from within the local areas.

I have several sets from my home area, some from back in the 60's and they are from bone white to almost dark chocolate in color.

They may be close to their natural color.

I have been using this formula for years and it works great.
Purchase some Potassium Permangamate crystals from any Taxidermy
supply Co or try your local Pharmacy.
This Antler Stain is used to restore the natural color to
Bleached and Faded Antlers:
1.Dissolve 1/2 Teaspoon of Potassium Permangamate in 1/2 Cup of
Warm water.
2.Apply this solution to the antlers with a Brush or a Wad of
cloth ( like I do ),Until the desired color is attained.
Note* This liquid is a Deep purple color,But dries to a Rich
Brown.I strongly Recomend that you use Rubber/latex gloves or
will have purple hands for about a week.
If you need Further info, just Email me. Good Luck
