Odd Smelling Sika

Submitted by Court on 2/27/00. ( spottedfawn@hotmail.com ) 64.28.100.68

I just completed a sika deer mount and noticed that is has a funny
oder to it. It doesn't smell sour, just gamey. I was worried
there might be mold growing or bacteria. There hasn't been
an unusual amount of hair slippage but I have noticed
an ocassional strand or two falling out from around the neck
and shoulders. I thought this might be normal since the sika
has such a thick hide and long hair. Don't know what to do
about the smell. Will it go away with time?

Hi Court,
How was it tanned? You said it has a thick hide. Was it shaved? With a
little more info we might have an answer.

Thanks! TimB

Well, let's see...

I wasn't the one who shaved it and I sent it to a tannery. I did notice this morning
that the smell could not be detected from such a great distance. Yesterday it was
detectable from about 10 feet and today it was only detectable from about
5 feet. I'm truly a beginner so please forgive me for my lack of good information.
I am now wondering if the oder will just go away.

Try spraying it with a little Febreeze. It is an odor remover & found in your grocery store. Spray on a liberal coat & comb through the hair. Ive had good luck with it on goats.

Hi Court we mount a lot of Sika in New Zealand and I have never had one that smells after mounting ? I would say that the tanner has stuff up I tan all my own skins, Before I mount I wash them in a shampo they use on pets for shows this gives them a nice shine to the coat.
If the smell is to bad I would be taking it back to the tanner and see what he has to say abou't it. good luck!
