Freezer vs Freeze Dried

Submitted by Bob Peasley on 3/1/00. ( ) 12.7.5.24

Is there a market for wild turkey heads that have been frozen? I think there is a big difference between frozen and freeze dried. I am not equiped to freeze dry but in the near future will have access to six or so gobbler heads. Would appreciate any assistance. Thanks.

I ahve a wholesale freeze dry business and offer $3.00 credit for freeze drying for each head if this interests you. From my experience this is what most wholesale freeze dryers do

freeze them in solid ice...

Yes there is a market. Most freeze dry businesses will pay around $7.00 per head. Some of these specialize in turkey heads. The skins are of value also as many hunters really do a job on the specimens at times. Especially when the bird really gets flopping around. Sometimes it is easier for the taxidermist to replace the skin than try to repair and mount the shot up one.

Jim Hutton, RR 2, Box 65-A, Union Dale, PA 18470 is always looking for these and is pretty fair with the price. Phone 717 448 2516. He also does an extremely nice turkey mount and used to offer a wholesale service. He's got great credentials to boot.
