I have a deer cape that has been frozen since 97 season. Is the cape still usable or has it been frozen too long? Can the cape develope frost burn and would this cause the hair to slip if I decided to use it? Thanks for any advice.

There are to many things "variables" here. Thaw it and see, it may have been spoiled when it was frozen. How are we to know over the internet.

I am a beginner. I have mounted two deer with capes that were already tanned by someone else. I have never tanned one myself. I put the cape in the freezer planning to use it, but left it longer than I wanted to. When I thaw it, what do I need to look for? I was told that the ears would probably be ruined by now. If everything looks alright, what are the first steps to keeping it from slipping. I have some books and some videos, but the info I have isn't too clear on tanning process. Thanks for the reply.
How long you can leave a cape in the freezer depends entirely on how
it was wrapped, and how cold your freezer is. Typically, home freezers
maintain a temp. of well below zero. This is not nesessary for keeping
taxidermy specimens. I maintain a freezer temp. of approx. 10 degrees
above zero. When you wrap a cape for freezing, fold the ears in, and
roll up with the nose and ears in the middle of the roll. Double bag
in plastic, put in a paper grocery bag, roll up and tape. I have used
capes that were 4 and 5 years old that were prepped like this, and
they were in good shape.
Hope this helps.
Been thoroughly covered in all that mess. (Tanning, Deer)
