Rehydrating

Does it make a difference which type of tanning was done and how the cape or hide is rehydrated? I have a deer cape tanned with Liqua Tan. Is there a "best" way to rehydrate this?

I believe the directions for Liqua tan are on the bottle. It says that once tanned it should be frozen or mounted immediatly.......I have done this with excellant results. Never have I left it to harden so that it needed rehydrating. Guess all you could do it try rehydrating in water and salt and a bactericide and if it works great. If not then you'll need to start over with a new hide. Good luck and if it works I would like to know myself. Pat

Step 3

You did forget Step 3, which is: Let it dry out hard, min. of 5 days. Then you can rehydrate and mount. Both methods work out good.

It depends on whether it was pickled or not. If it was you soak it in cold water and salt, 1/4 cup per gallon is fine, for an hour. Take it out and place in a plastic bag and place in the refrigerator overnight. It should be ready to mount the next day.

If it wasn't pickled or washed in a bacteracide prior to tanning, I would add some bactercide to the soak. I used to dry all my liqua tanned capes just to set the hair good. They just seemed to take forever to rehydrate because I didn't oil them or sand the surface.

thanks
