Do I need to tan?

I am a novice to taxidermy having done a couple of small game and one deer head, but, all of these were done some 14-15 years ago with the guideance of a friend who was a taxi. of "the old school". my
question is i have my deer cape in an alum-salt-borax pickle for about 2weeks now and as i remember (as my friend is not with us anylonger)i did't use a "TAN" per-say after the pickle i went right to the mounting process, the head i have mounted seems to be ok but have noticed some black spots -very small around the mouth area, and never any sign of decay .Should i go with what i know or is there something in the new home tans that will insure that the cape will be preserved better .Thanks in advance for any info ,just found the forum and plan to be a regular. (sorry for the length)

It is a good way to set hair on a deer, but old fashioned. Alum is still used in many pickles and tans. But there are many new and better products out there. If you check under tanning you can find lots of new info there. Or even run it on the search engine.
