Deer eyelid shrinkage

Submitted by Dave on 3/20/00. ( ) 206.27.38.39

I have done a few deer shoulder mounts and have seemed to got my mounts looking pretty decent except for some lower eye lid seperaion from the glass. Also the pad in front of the eye has got some drumming, not the actual duct itself but the area between it and the eye. I am tanning the capes with ez 100. Seems to be a very good tan.About 1-2 mm of lid seperation is about average. After the finish work (wax, paint) it is not to bad. Is this just normal? I know maby a different hide paste might be better but I use dextrine because I seem to find stuff that I need to adjust in the first couple days after mounting. I am using critter clay and tucking the eye skin ,lots of paste in these areas. Any advise will be greatly appreciated!

After mounting, take a small brush and "paint" each eye with EZ 100.
This will slow the drying time of the eyelids. Each day after mounting, check eyes and press skin against the eye.
Most of the shrinkage is caused by drying too fast.
