I will be taking a week vacation to hunt turkeys next month. If I am lucky enough to get one or two ( I bought the bonus permit) what should I do to preserve the tail or tails until I get home? I really want to spend the whole week away. Is there something that will keep them in "limbo" until I get home and mount them properly. As you can tell I'm a beginner to this taxidermy stuff. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Scott
Do you have acess to a freezer where you are going? If so then just freeze it till you get home. If not cut the tail off about three or four rows back from the tail. Then try to get most of the meat and grease off, then salt it till you get home. After you return home you should then remove all the meat and grease then. Use a wire wheel if you have acess to or a wire brush. Somtimes a good pair of siccors will help in getting the fat off in between the quills.
Good Luck
Frank thanks for the help, I have one more question: Will table salt do the job? Or will I need special kind of salt.
Thanks again,
scott
Yes you can use regular table salt, but I prefer canning salt though. You can get it at the any supper market you go to.
Thanks Frank, now I'am ready!
