Putting a shine on that deer's nose

This one goes to the rookies like myself that, despite having the advice right in front of me, choose to take the short route. Last week, while finishing a couple of whitetail bucks, I decided to Mod Podge the nose to establish a little depth and texture. In fact, i even had Bill Yox's recent Breakthough article on finishing noses on the bench in front of me. Rather than give the nose an entire first coat, then follow up with a "dollup" of Podge on each pad, I skipped the first coat. When time to paint came along, each of those bumps was beautifully glossy while the original nose pad ( uncovered) has never attained the same wet look despite several coats of wet look high gloss spray. I like the textured look but will go the whole nine yards next time end encourage the rest of you rookies to listen when told to do something. There's a reason, I guess. Thanks, Bill.

You could, as it is, paint Mod Podge on now, the bumps will still be there. Just a thought.

What is your method?

What is your method for painting, mod podge, gloss? I just touched up the nose of a deer I'm working on with a little black apoxie sculpt. Do you guys seal, paint, mod podge, and then gloss coat? It sounds like in the above post, some mod podge the whole nose and then go back and accentuate the bumps. Thanks.

Nothing to it...

Accentuate... good word! Anyway, I airbrush the nose, rich brown in the bottom half and paynes gray on the rest. Brush from the side to let the rich brown show in the cracks. Now paint Mod Podge on the whole nose pad and front of lower lip. When dry, use a very small paint brush, or use the end of a paper clip, pencil, or anything pointy. Touch a bead of Mod Podge on every "cell" of the nose pad. That's it! Good luck.
