Ear Butts

I just finished a deer a couple of weeks ago and I was curious to what method others are using. I formed the ear butts in clay around Carter liners and onto the form. Next, after I positioned them, I removed the ear liners since I had already use another duplicate of liners and put them into the ears using smooth-out. However, as I was putting the cape onto the form, I would put the base of the ear into my presculpted ear butt and try to taxi and hold everything. I used T-pins, etc. By the time I got the incision sewed up, the ear butts got so distorted from the liners falling out all of the time and moving around. Sould I just put some clay around the base of the liner AFTER I sew it up a little. Any suggestions?
