Feather stains

Submitted by David Loupe on 6/2/00. ( louped@epenergy.com ) 204.149.21.4

I mounted a pintail a few days ago, their were alot of stains on the
white feathers. I washed and degreased the bird as usual. Some of the
stains came out, but the white feathers still reveals a orange tint.
Is there a product I can use, which will help.
Thanks David

They are more than likly rust stains. There are many products out there to remove this if you choose to do. Wink, Carbona, to name a few. You can get these at you local store.

One thing though it should have been done prior to mounting the bird. I rather not do it unless the client ask for the stains to be removed. This is the natural color of the bird while it was still living.

Up here in the northcountry where there's a lot of iron in the ground and water, it's not uncommon to see rust stained feathers on waterfowl. I've had success using Naval Jelly to remove these types of stains. You should be able to find Naval Jelly at harware stores and counters. Use on the feathers before you mount the skin. Apply with a paint brush, let it sit for awhile, then wash and rinse the skin as usual.
