rehydrating a squirrel's tail

Submitted by chad on 1/10/01. ( ) 209.142.161.211

i mounted a squirrel, and had to leave part of the tail bone attatched. it has already dried, and i found a better way to position the tail. is there any danger of hair slippage, if i rehydrate the skin? I dont know if it matters or not, but the skin was preserved using borax

thx, chad

I would leave it be

Chad, I would leave the squirrel be. If you rehydrate the squirrel tail then the moisture will sit in there unless you split the tail and preserve it again. I would just chalk it up to experience and do it right the next time. In my opinion you will never get a rehydrated piece to look as good as the original. Hope this helped you. Good luck.

Dane is probably right. if you left the bone in, then the tail isn't preserved with anything, it is just dried. if you re-hydrate it, all the hair might fall out.

It might work, but no way to guarantee.
If you think the potential improvement outways the chance of ruining the mount then try it.

Good Luck
Dave
