borax

Submitted by village idiot on 1/12/01. ( ) 216.128.179.226

What is the REAL difference between dry preservative and borax if any? Idunno if this question has been asked before because there's too many in the archives about the DP thing. I know that borax CAN be used for small birds and mammals but is there any difference. Is one more bug proof than the other etc? I'm under the impression that some of the DP substances have SOME bug repelling abilities. Am I wrong in that assumption?

Thanks in advance for the help given to someone who is just trying to learn.

Hey Idiot!

Keep reading searches. There is info on how tanning rebuilds fiber structures etc.... I am sure others can tell you more. I'm new, and it is too complicated for me to try to explain it at this time. There are some AWESOME posts about this! One was written by Jerry Stringer if I recall correctly (I thought it said Jerry Springer Hee Hee!). Try typing that in the search and see if that helps any. All I DO know for sure is... you're done for now Bud! This site is EXCEPTIONALLY ADDICTIVE!

How's that yote anyways?

Let us know!

Lorrie

P.S. For whatever reason, people seem to get very protective of their chosen method. Better wear some head gear Honey. I have a feeling that you may have already noticed! :-)

Borax Question

This response submitted by B.C.G. on 1/12/01. ( ) 209.130.183.140

I am still wondering about this last post...is it a joke? or someone on drugs?...Anyway, I Think I can answer your Q without being a jerk...Borax is traditionally a laundry additive to draw out stains and whiten clothes. It has drying properties that makes it ideal for soaking up greasy bird fat, suck as duck, goose, turkey. It also does wonders when trying to remove cheek meat from fish...pack it in the eye socket, and scrape away...you'll excavate alot more meat...and have a nicer looking eye.

The difference between Borax and dry preserve is simply that they have different applications. You simply cant rely on borax to preserve a hide or whatever on its own...Hope this helps...

PS...Dont pay attention to wierdo's that make fun of your questions...

happy mounting!

Not a Jerk...... SERIOUS!

I did misread the question however. I read it as Dp vs. Tanning... which IS a debate that DOES require full body armor apparently (can you say JOKE)? It was very late, and I got excited remembering an article I read while searching tanning. It was written by someone that seemed VERY knowledgeable. His name was Jerry Stringer. I remember it well, as I thought it was Jerry Springer! I still recommend reading the article, as I see my friend Idiot is thirsting for knowledge. There were countless articles, and I thought it might be easier to locate it faster by simply typing in the authors name. Hope this works. It might be a joke in fact... but if it is, it was a good one! I learned A LOT! Try it for yourself!

Weirdos and Idiots get along very nicely. Wouldn't have it any other way! It must be awful being so serious Boo Boo!

My drug of choice IS Taxidermy.net forums... Thank you, Thank you very much! So what, I see it's yours too.....

Our friend Idiot did in fact pose an excellent question. I have wondered this myself. I am looking forward to hearing more input on the subject myself. B.G.W. you started... can you be more specific?

Thanks,

Lorrie

P.S. How goes the Coyote project anyways? You can e-mail me private if you wish.

LOL I wasn't offended in the least! I have a pretty good understanding about the tanning process now. I bought the Sallie Dahmes (hope i spelled that correctly) whitetail mounting video. It goes completely through the tanning process. It's a great video for a beginner! In addition to that, I've been reading the beginners' manuals. I'm still not so sure about what the "true" difference is between DP and borax. I'm aware of the applications for both and I also realize that many use borax as a preservative for mounting ducks and squirrels etc. (or maybe that was just done in the past)
I DO love this forum and I'm totally addicted! Thank you to Lorrie and B.C.G. for your attempts to help me with this question. AND thanks again to Dave for helping me with my first question in here.
About the yote.......I haven't started on the critter yet because I wanted to learn the "proper" proceedure for caping him before starting. I think I've learned that process now but haven't had a free day to let him thaw and attempt the caping as of yet. I think I'm going to try mounting a duck or two to begin with and then move to a fox that I recently called in and shot.*proud of calling in my first varmint* Then...later comes the yodel dawgie.
Annnnnnnnnyway, I'm rambling and I've got tons of recent posts to read. heh heh

Thanks again everyone!

Dave Says

Hi again Idiot,

I always end up answering these questions, it seems to be my "calling" on this site.

here's the answer you need.
around here borax and DP are used almost interchangably.
with the exception of Vandykes brand, DP is primarily borax based. most companies add a few extra ingredients for more protection---some use talc, mothballs, food preservatives,anit-clumping agents and only God knows what else, but they are primarily borax plus something else. these additional ingredients can improve the product and make it easier to work with.

borax is an excellent bug-proofer, the best thing available to the taxidermist for bug protection. it should be used on all mounts if you are concerned about infestation.
The best protection comes from soaking skins in a saturate solution of borax or DP before mounting.

hope that helps.

PS--borax WILL do a good job of preserving a skin, but DP is usually easier to work with(less clumping).

Dave

Where's that Switch?!?

This response submitted by Please don't take me out back now, but... on 1/13/01. ( CanAWhoopASS.com ) 205.188.209.169

While holding her breath and cringing, she says:

Could a person tan the hide for preserving, then apply borax or dp for bug-proofing? For the best of both worlds so to speak?

She screams as she is hauled away by the pack... "Good bye cruel world...."

LOLOL!

Mr. L Pray preferred dipping tanned skins in a borax solution and the best way to protect them against bugs.his studies are the still the best and most complete on this subject.

Thanks I'll!

WOW! I survived?

I am sure there are articles regarding his works in Breakthrough Magazine, unfortunately I don't have any yet. I have located some things in the search, but have not had time yet to read them thoroughly.

Does anyone know if he has written any books, and where a person might be able to obtain one?

Thanks whoever you were! Whewwwwwwww..................

P.S. I kinda like having someone else be the village idiot for once! Hee Hee! ;-)

Borax is a Go!

This response submitted by M.T. on 1/15/01. ( ) 198.111.209.152

I've been doing taxidermy for 30 years,Wow!I've mounted everything from moles to lifesize elk. I've tried almost everything on the market including tannery tans. They are not what they are cracked up to be. I don't buy videos or books or have I ever taken a lesson, but I can tell you that borax is excellent. If more taxidermists would use thier heads and not rely on someone else to tell them what would work or not, there would be a lot more Know-How out there. I have Mounted many things over the years using just plain borax with excellent results, there are some DP out there that I would'nt use, There is one that use all of the time on birds, fish ,and small mammals. Dont be afraid to experiment on your own projects, you might just learn something you could never read from a book, after all, taxidermy is about 70% common sense. Gotta go mount 2 Steelhead right now,Later!
