neck sizing

When using artifical neck material what is the correct size? The way i do it is when i skin the bird,i remove the windpipe and measure the neck without it,its widith and lengeth.My question is how tight should the skin be on the neck when first mounted.should there be any room between the skin and neck material. Say you are doing a mallard and the neck measures 3/4 of a inch, should you put back 3/4 or say 5/8 neck material. thanks

Bob;

I find that what ever size comes out needs to be put back...When I shin a neck, I trace the outline of the neck (along with the body) on a piece of paper-both front and sideways...while you trace the sideway view, mark the thickness of the wind pipe...when you are ready to mount he bird, get or make the neck the size on your tracing - (I do this without the windpipe and then add the windpipe to the neck)...Hope this helps...email me if you have questions..Dan

Keep in mind you want the neck to fit loosely on the necking material. A tight fit will result in some serious problems down the road. You don't want it to be to sloppy either. I would experiment and try different sizes in the neck before you actually sew it up and wire everything. Make sure also that you have preserved the inside of the neck. This will allow the foam to slide through easier. good luck
