I am about to mount my first deer. I didn't know how to skin it at the time so I put the whole head including skull in the deep freeze. It's been in there about a little over a month. I've heard not to let it thaw too much because of bacteria. I wondered if I needed to let it set in bacteriacide while thawing or just let it thaw but not completely? Any suggestions?

Nathan,
Just take it out of the freezer the night before your going to skin it out and it should thaw just fine. put it in the basement or in the utility room as long as it is not super warm.I am not sure where you are from but if you live somewhere warm keep a close eye on it and dont let it get to warm thats when bacteria starts to grow.If you have any doubts just rub salt on the meat as you go salt makes a poor enviroment for bacteria to grow.If you have any more questions feel free to e mail me. GOOD LUCK ROB
Nathan,
Do not worry about bacteria if you froze it right after you shot it. Where you will run into problems is taking it out of the freezer and putting it back in a bunch of times. It is best for you to take it out of the freezer, cape it and flesh it all at one time. You can then refreeze it and when you take it out again, mount it. It is bad to refreeze and thaw the deer cape more than two times. good luck, drop me a line if you have any more questions. Dane
