painting wood duck

Submitted by chad on 1/24/01. ( ) 63.89.151.31

does anyone know what colors to use on a wood duck bill. I don't have a airbrush yet so have to paint by hand. seams the colors in the catalogs are for air brushing and are all together differnt then the acrylic you get locallly. Also the colors for the legs. maybe the airbrush colors you use and I can take a taxi catalog with me to try to match the colors with acrylic. thanks a bunch.

Chad,
first, you should use reference (photos or live) to determine your colors. all you need are red, black, white, and yellow.(maybe brown on legs)
use reference and trust your eyes instead of trying match paint color-to - paint color.

probably more wooducks are hand-painted than any other bird. so that shouldn't be a problem.
you can use artist paints or even hobby paints, and you'll find 10 shades of each color that will work just fine.An exact color really isn't that critical.

painting tip-- especially on the legs---thin your paints and build up the color gradually--you'll get better blending that way. there really isn't a sharp color contrast between the yellow and brown/black of the webs and joints.

Good Luck
Dave
