Starting back into the taxidermy business

Submitted by Billy Celey on 1/24/01. ( billy.celey@opussouth.com ) 63.117.55.121

I have been a profesional taxidermist in the past but have been out of the business for years. Even out of the area in which I then lived. I have seeeeeeveral questions. What would be the most effecient means of advertising my new business? I live in Williamson County, Texas (outside Austin). Could you possible give me the approx. anual overhead cost (less rent and utilities)for a small taxidermy studio doing 25 deer head mounts and 25 game birds a year? Any and all your help will be appreciated. I wish this forum had spell check.

If they don't know a taxidermist- how do they find one?

I have really just one bit of advise for you--get a business telephone-- even if you work from your home. So many good taxidermists use their home phones which is fine once people know you but there are a lot more people that don't know you, than there are people that do know you. By getting a business phone you get listed in the yellow pages and that's where you get the business. For me when I checked on different types of phone service I found a plan that was no more than my home phone and I think most phone cos. offer different options. Call the business ofice and ask what the cheapest business phone deal is--you might be surprised. I bought only the basic listing in nearby towns' yellow pages and have gotten great response. All is tax deductable anyway. Good luck-Aaron

after you get a few costumers coming start to give them refferal cards. i took biz cards and stamped them on the back with a place for your costumers name and ten bucks off to who ever came in with the card, then i filed that card under the name on the back and gave them five bucks off for every card under their name when they came in with their next job. it was alot like a chain letter deal and biz started to mushrrom so fast i dont even do it any more to much work to do now!
