Reasons

There could be many different reasons going on here.

Age of the bird. Are you doing yearling? The bird will have pin feathers and will cause havic. Needs to have a good preen job.

How about you fleshing? Is the bird free of fat and grease back there? This is another way the feathers will go out of wack. You need to flesh the bird so that the quill tips show through then a good degrease like Epo-grips degreaser. then the feathers will lay better.

Ok lets say the above is totally wrong here. You have birds that are two years older or more, the fleshing is done properlly. Here is the last reason and may be cause. Undried feathers. Yo need to make sure those down feathers are dried. This is to me probally the most important part of drying a bird is to have them dried and fluffed up. By doing this the feathers will aline much better and will make the bird come to life. Then ofcourse you need to preen.

Lastly I hope you have the feathers in the right placement. You don't want to pull them up or down. Make sure the skin is in the right position. Wing feathers are where they should be, neck where they should be. Some people pull and tug and think this is wher this goes cause it looks good. Wrong reference, reference and even more reference helps a great deal when doing any bird.
