Cracked Cape

Has anyone ever had a cape crack to the touch after
salt drying? I have done many capes without this problem,
but this week I brought a doe cape to the tannery and as
it was being marked it just cracked. Further pressure and the thing
was like "potato chips"! What did I do wrong? My process was:
1) Cape
2) flesh using rotary knife
3) Salt 24hrs/Shake re-salt and let dry for 1 week
..........Any help?.....Mike

for the tannery, just get the red meat ans fat off the hide, let them do their job, thats shaving after the pickle. John C
