Which finishing wax to use?

Submitted by Sean K. on 1/31/01. ( ) 205.188.208.203

I have just mounted my second WT buck. I am pleased with the outcome
but I'm not sure that I'm using the most lifelike wax around the
eyes. I'm using burnt umber from WASCO. Is there a better color
out there or is this the one I should be using? I have seen some
competition mounts where around the eyes looked grayish. I would
appreciate any help with this. ( I have never had any training,
just reading a lot af books and watching videos.)

It's just a filler and in time will come out. When a competition mount is done or just any mount that's done today, most quality taxidermist paint there eyes. If there needs repair work it will be epoxyed in and then painted. What will help is getting Breakthrough magazine. They will always have some of the latest techniques on anything and everything. If you need a paint schedule it's easy.
Flesh the eye out lightly, then you can use a burnt umber and go over with black umber. There are also many other colors inbetween that will change the hue of the eye.
