Chad,
The lower the pH of the soap, the warmer the water needs to be. Since water is "neutral" at 7, Dawn is just a little more alkali at 8. The warm water allows it to penetrate better. Epo-Grip Degreaser/Blood Out has a pH of 12+. It works fine with tap water at normal temperatures.

Caution!

Chad,
I rinse the fleshed side of my birds after fleshing them with hot water(i.e just hot enough so you can hold your hand under the faucet without getting scalded. Rinse as much of the slim and greese off the fleshed side as possible, and off any feathers. Be careful not to let the skin get to hot, especially around the head. Total time I have these skins under the hot water is less than 1 minute. After rinsing, I let them soak in cold water and Dawn dish soap for as long as needed (i.e. until all the feathers are clean). If there is alot of blood in the feathers add some 20 volume developer (~1 cup per gallon of water). I sometimes let these birds soak over night in the water/soap/developer solution. KEEP WATER COOL (~ 40 to 42 degrees). The developer does not harm the feathers. However, I have used the GASTROL BRAND CLEANER IN THE PURPLE CONTAINER. THIS MULTIPURPOSE CLEANER CAN CAUSES FEATHER DISCOLORATION! USE WITH CAUTION! Good Luck.
