I have a question about noses in general and raccoons in specific. Do I leave any of the cartlidge in the nose area or do I remove everything but the outside nose surface? I seem to be having a difficult time seeing where to "split" the cartlidge from the skin to open up the nose. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Man this is hard to explain. You will see the main cartilage in the middle of the nose. You need to make a cut on each side of it and take out the center piece. You will see what I meen when you do this. From there you need to get rid of the rest just by cutting it with you scapel. Removing cartiladge becomes something you learn as you go. No book or video can really show you this. You need to really see how it's done by watching someone, side by side. This is the best way of learning.
Sometimes it's may be best to use a replacement nose. Always have one on hand for reference and for those just incase I make a mistake cut and can't fix it.
Thanks for trying to explain it...I have one more question though, do you mean that if I remove the center portion, it will make it easier to "turn" the nose a little to reach the rest?
That's the main one. Once this is cut out you will be able to do each side.
I can't wait to get back to my raccoon and dive in. I considered getting an artificial nose and maybe I'll try it down the line, but I really want to try things using the original "equipment" first; besides, this racoon has some neat mottling on his nose and I like it, it makes it look like the individual that it is! Thank you again, Frank.
