Smelly Coyote, need advice!

Submitted by Mike on 2/12/01. ( ) 64.12.96.168

I was away for a couple weeks, and a package with a coyote
skin came. My mom did not freeze it or anything and it really
stinks. I emediately put it in the freezer. Is there anything
I can do to rehabilitate this beautiful fur so it is mountable?

LOL,

first you need to decide--"how bad do I want this skin?"
(or maybe "how long can I hold my breath") lol

If you really want to try and save this skin--and are willing to deal with the smell, even though it will probably be a wasted effort----then here's what you do.

buy several gallons of rubbing alcohol(not that expensive), and thaw your yote in it. a shallow bin, or bathtub will work good.
the alcohol will kill any bacteria on the skin and stop slippage(if it isn't already too late) as it starts to thaw, you'll find out whether or not the slippage is too extreme. --you might get away with a few small spots on the belly, but if it is extensive, then toss it.

if a miracle occurs and the puppy shows no sign of slippage as it thaws, then skin it (hold your breath!) and do your turning asap(hopefully before it completely thaws).
re-freeze until you can mount(thaw in alcohol again, and use DP)

if you insist on tanning, then salt immediately and proceed with tanning steps(and pray for good results)

I wish you luck with your project--you'll need it.

Dave
