I have a few holes in the neck on a short haired cape and I'm not sure what is the best size needle and thread to use? Thanks for your help.

Bill,
Not to be smart (darn it), but use the smallest needle that will accept the strongest clear thread that you have. I use 3/8 curve sail needles and I'd have to use dental floss and a 1 inch needle to do this. It's your choice.
I am one of those taxidermists who avoids sewing. When I have a cut in the cape, I just mount the deer as usual using a good hide paste such as Buckeye hide paste supreme. Then I come back with a adjusting probe and place the edges of the cut together. I use small wire brads and brad the gap back together. You can mallet the area to smooth it out. Use thinner and a wire brush to clean up and groom the area. This seems to hide the imperfection of the cut much better than sewing the hole.
