Antler Question

Submitted by Jay on 2/13/01. ( ) 209.240.220.170

Recently, I have fixed missing points, cracks, and chips in antlers. I have used the white clay-like substance that the catalogs recommended for doing this. I've found that repairing antlers with this stuff is easier than I thought. Anyway, some of the major catalogs offer Replica deer antlers. But what do they make them with? I'm guessing it's the same stuff I use to repair antlers. But I have not found a catalog that sells this stuff, saying it can be used for making fake antlers, but to make repairs. Is this because it's not possible for someone to successfully sculpt a rack, or so we can buy their replica racks and not make our own? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jay

There are many products that these what you call major companies don't have. It's found in the molding section.

But I rather deal with different high class companies when I do replicas. These companies will only deal with the top notch people who does this work. We don't want the public to have the knowledge it takes to make molds. You might want to steal from us. ROFLMAO

Now back to reality. If you check the archives or search you will find some of your answers there. The reason I saying this it will take to long to explain on how to do this.

Breakthrough magazine has covered this subject a couple of times on how to cast antlers. It's a little time consuming but fun. In there there are different companies that carry products for casting antlers.

I deal with a guy here in PA - Jeff Kuhn He carries many different casting products for antler making. If you need more info e-mail me and I'll try to help out some.

Good Info from Frank.

but, to answer your question directly---they are different products.

the "white Stuff" is a 2 part sculpting epoxy that has a gazillion uses.

most artificial antlers are make from a casting resin, which is a liquid that is poured into a mold, then it "sets" and becomes hard.

there are different kinds casting materials that are used---from fiberglass resins to xtra dense foam.

it wouldn't be commercially practical to make an entire set of antlers out of all-game(white stuff).

Hope that helps.
Dave
