Attempting to mount my first Gamehead. Yes, I chose a boar for my first attempt at Taxidermy. Everything I've done so far I learned from reading the archives. I feel I have done everything good so far except for the ears. I turned them, dry salted, but didn't remove the cartilage. I realise to do the job right I would need to install earliners. I have spent many hours on this hide up til now. I am afraid to try and remove the cartilage and hose up my only hide by tearing the ears. Is there someone that can help me through my challenge. I am confused on the inner ear down around the canal.

NOTHING TO IT!BE SURE TO TURN THE EARS ALL THE WAY.YOU'LL HAVE TO GO QUITE A WAYS PAST THE EDGE OF THE CARTILIDGE TO DO IT RIGHT.REMOVE CART. DOWN TO INNER EAR DETAIL,CUT OFF THE EAR CANAL,BUY DETAILED EAR LINERS,MOUNT WITH A GOOD GLUE,WHEN DRY BLEND SKIN TO LINER WITH SCALP-ALL OR EPOXY CLAY,PAINT AND IT WILL LOOK FINE!
I have a video from Rhinehart Taxidermy (wild hog mounting...)they use the bondo method for the ears which you can then leave in the cartilge. Hope this helps.
P.S. The video is great, you might want to get it when you can.
My mentor once gave me some very good inside information on the topic of ears. 'Y'......
just add y to your ears and you have perfection. Learn through trying.
get the video from Rinehart taxidermy supply on customer/competition boar mounting. i too chose a boar for my first mount and entered it competition. it was judged by matt thompson and scored a first place blue ribbon best of category in the amatuer division. the video will not only show you how to flesh and mount a boar, but also shows you how to finish the boar, including painting....BONDO THE EARS in the garage or someplace with an exhaust fan
Thanks, for the advise. I ended up in the garage for 3 hours with a scalpel and got all the cartilage removed with minimal damage. I ended up skinning it off. Every time I tried to pull it off with my fingers it would tear. The earliners fit perfect. Hopefully the inner ear will dry and suck back to the liner. First time.... Once again thanks.
