Pa state taxidermy exam

Submitted by Kelly on 2/28/01. ( ) 64.41.44.156

This is concerning the Pa state taxidermy exam. I was told that you are now able to take the exam in 3 separate tests (mammals, fish, birds) but when I received my permit application from the game commission it stated that you need all the specimens in one test. Could someone tell me which one is right? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Specialty Licenses

I believe what you are referring to is the specialty permits. These enable you to mount just fish, or birds, or mammals. The general license still requires you to submit 5 specimens. 1 waterfowl, 1 upland game bird, 1 small mammal, 1 fish, and 1 antlered game head. However there are three parts to the test, written, practical and your specimens. Hope things haven't changed in the last few months or I could be wrong. Hope this helps.

Actual Taxidermy Exams...

I find it very interesting that PA has such type of exams, here in Texas, we don't even need a permit or license (except Federal for ducks...)

Are there other states that require exams or license? And reasons why? I guess it would guarantee professional quality...

Any idea what the state looks for in the mounts, etc?

Just curious. Thanks.

it's a money rackett they charge $ 100.00 a year for license
personaly I think thats a bit steap pluss if you want to dael in furs
theres another permit then theres the federal hows all the charges
keeping quality up ? I think the test is ok that helps keep
the quality up I guess they do have knolagable people look at
your work they give some good pointers but they can realy pick
you appart if you fail any one specimen you just have to take
that one again "new one" PAY another fee! the written part is easy
Kelly as far as the seperate exams just call your reginal
game office and ask for speciffic application J M

If you think Pa is bad try to ask the game commission for roadkill antlers (small spikes and broken ones) for use in projects with the cub scouts. I did and was read the riot act. They own the animals alive or dead and any part of them. MONEY-- MONEY
