I have never mounted anything before, but really want to learn. I've watched some videos, and read up on it. Now ready to try. I have plenty of antlers, but no cape. I see them listed on this forum for sale. Is there anything I need to know before trying to by one? I would like to try to make my first attempt a good experence. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

can help also have some tanned capes email me
I'm also planning to do my first whitetail soon. One thing you will definitely need to know is the size of the cape so you can order the right size form
besure your cape has been shaved thin enough and you have all your measurements correct the eye to nose and the neck size and the measurement of the cape from the back corner of the eye to the base of your antlers so everything lines up correct this i forgot to check and one other and had to start all over it came out good the second try.but i had a real mess the first time. i recommend for your first few mounts to get an already tanned capes and then if you like after you learn the mounting part and then learn the tanning part
I'm a 3 year beginner,I've done 37 deer heads and 1 fullbody raccoon.I did the coon first because everybody I talk to about taxidermy said "YOU DON'T WANT TO MESS WITH COONS" and about 60hours later and i got it done, I knew why they said that.[by the way it even looks like a raccoon.]but any how I would suggest doing a doe first.get the feel of it ,my first deer were does I was very nervous.Bucks don't come easy and i didn't want to mess up a buck.after i got my first head done i hung it on the living room wall across from my chair. i looked at it all the time for the mistakes so i would not make them again.the second head had some of the some mistakes just so i kick my self in the butt.now 35 heads later i think i'm gitting the hang of it.Just remember it's art and take your time don't rush it. just something for you to think about. you can do it. good luck.
