Learning to flesh and tan

Submitted by wade jensen on 3/5/01. ( wjensen@wyoming.com ) 204.227.220.202

I am a beginner and working on teaching myself through videos, reading and taking advice.I have a green frozen whitetail cape that was given to me and I want to flesh, pickle, tan and work on making a fairly decent mount of him. This cape has been frozen for well over a year, I got the ears turned, lips split, nose tubed out and around the eyes cleaned up, should I salt and pickle next or try to flesh next,I have videos that show it both ways which is the best? I have fleshing machine that I have been practicing on and getting fairly good at adjusting and using. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Flesh

Flesh it. SOme people will tell you to pickel it for about 24 or 48 hours. Then shave it. I always flesh it, then pickel it, then shave it. I recokon it's really up to you.

Tanning

Once the cape is thawed, the sooner you get salt on it the better. Split everything, remove the large chunks of meat and fat then salt heavily. After 24 hrs. shake off the salt and salt it again. The next day, soak it back up. Now I put it into the pickle for a day. It is easier to flesh after pickling. Flesh, return to pickle. WASCO has a great tanning video by Sallie Dahmes. It's worth the price.
