Salmon skinning question

Submitted by Bruce Davis on 3/21/01. ( dvsbruce8@cs.com ) 205.188.208.72

I put a salmon in the freezer and then found that I measured it wrong. My question is this. When I take it out to remeasure, can I skin it and just put the skin back in the freezer or would that damage the skin? Thanks for the help.

Bruce you can do that. What I do is put it in my tan but if want to put it back in the freezer lay it out flat on a piece of plywood lay it in a wet towel and let it freeze. Pull it out when you get your form or ready to mount. I lay it on the board to keep from wrinkling the skin and prevent scale loss. Hope this helps.

Believe it or not!

Its funny we are talking about this because just today, I mounted a nice King salmon that I caught in 1987. It was frozen whole until 1993 when I needed some extra room in that freezer.I then took it out and skinned it, then put it back into the freezer until yesterday. Today I carved a body, and mounted it.Looks awsome! Oh, by the way, I have many more unbelievable stories than just that one.

WOW! That was fast...

I do not know about salmon But I skin steelies all the time, roll the hide around the head, place then in a vacume seal bag and freeze them . I thaw thwm in the pickle, they work fine. last year I found one dated 1991 pickeled it and it mounted fine Good luck.
