This is probably another dumb question. In the past when caping out a deer I used to make a cut down the entire length of the cape. During the salting phase the cape was laid out flat, hair down, on an incline to drain. I've now started using the short incision cut. I know I'm behind the times but I'm learning, many thanks to all of you who take the time to help people like me out. My question is, now with the short incision cut the hide is actually round, and during the salting process do I salt one side roll it over and heavily salt the top, then rotate the next day? I'm concerned about salt staying on the skin on the under side while on the drying rack. Thanks for your time.

A few years ago some supply company was selling coyote fur stretchers to use to dry your salted cased capes on.They were selling the stretchers for 30.00 each which is wayyy much more than you can get them for from trap suppliers. I got some yote stretchers for like 6.00 each at National Trappers convention last fall, and they work great!. Salt the hide down, rub the salt in and place on the stretcher, put stretcher over a spot where the fluid can be caught ( plastic basin works too).Next day, resalt, and then just let the cape dry.It dries fairly quick on the stretcher. This is the #6 size stretcher, I also use a #5( xxl coon and fox) on smaller capes and sika capes.I also use stretchers on case skinned fox and coon that I prep for mounting to sell.I turn and salt them the same.Do not use the hooks on the stretcher though. The salting takes care of having to really stretch to dry like you would on air drying furs. You could use muskrat stretchers if you have a fox ,coon, or bobcat cape.Make sure you remove rust from the wire every so often and don't use this on white fur, it might get a rust stain.
