I have been doing taxidermy for 3 years. I have done 37 deer heads and 1 full body raccoon.where i live there is limit on does,I have mounted every doe that me and my wife have killed.[to get experience]. have done some for friends at no charge but materials.I have full time job and at this point taxidermy is just something I do between deer and turkey season. i have booked a black bear bowhunt for this september in maine. after booking i thought about going somewhere different every year. now the taxidermy comes in to play if i could do 15-20 heads a year,i could use the money from that to hunt anywhere.i took a head[doe]i did to the local taxidermy shop. I was told i had a minor alignment problem in the armpits, but anyone would be happy with it.so when do you know when your ready for a license?and start making money.

P.S. I took head to taxidermy shop last year. have done 7 this year and all 7 look better then that one.[alignment problem gone].

if you are in penna you need a license as soon as you do work for someone other than yourself, free or not, you need a license. period. you need a license if you plan on advertising your business, check with your state game department and if you plan on doing migratory birds get a federal permit from the u.s. fish & wildlife people.

In The Near Future

I think you should think about getting your license in the near future. The more practice you get the better you will become. You
could start by just doing it for friends and family and then move up
to doing it locally. See how that goes and then if all is going well,
you could start your own shop and do some major advertising.
Good luck to you!
