Dry preservative

My question is if I dry preserve bird skins or other skins do I still have to bug proof the mount. At school in Texas, we used dry preservative on our birds, but what is involved in tanning birds. I have mounted a few birds with dry preserve, but seems to have a odor after I am finished. Please help.

It's mainly use on birds as your doing. You can tan them with Knobloch's bird tan if you like. There is some difference but for me and others it doesn't make that much of a difference.

Now for the bad news. If your doing Sea birds they do have an ordor but it does go away after a good washing or two. If your getting a real bad smell the problem may lie in on how your fleshing your bird. If it's not fleshed right and wash and degreased this will cause you a smell that you are saying.

Most of the time I will wash my bird 3 to 4 times, then a good rinse. Got to get it clean. But a slight smell after mounting is normal. But if the smell is still there weeks after the mount then you got problems.
