All,
I have a whitetail head brought to me by the customer who cut the hide too short. It wont quite make it to the rear of the form where the hanger attaches. My question is, how do I approach this problem? Do I cut the back of the form to make it fit and if so should I just glue a piece of wood to the back? Or should I alter the form in some other way?
Regards,
Jason

Order one of Joe Meder's forms from Tom Powell Supply which is now part of McKenzie Supply Co. They have a shorter shoulder than most forms. Actually the shoulders are the best I've seen. Most forms have to big of a brisket. Most of all they look like a whitetail should look when done. They are easy to mount on. The capes fit very nice.
if it is cut to short u may have to go to a neck only mount. Make sure you talk to the customer first before doing so/
Whatever you do, don't go with a neck form unless you absolutely have to! First, either point out to the customer where he went wrong, or take pictures so you can point out later what you did. You have two options short of ordering a form with smaller brisket as mentioned in previous message. One is to shorten the neck slightly. Cut the neck about half way down with a "V" cut. The "V" will help with realigning the neck when you reattach it. Now cut away just enough on one section or the other to get the cape to fit. Reattach the head to the chest with bondo or foam and you're ready to go. The other option is to cut the required amount away from the back of the form. Using a rasp, remove the foam still attached to the backboard. Using a saw, cut the backboard down to fit the back of the form now that it is smaller. You can bondo or glue the board directly to the back of the now shorter form, or remove foam and recess the board into the back of the form. I like to reattach the board with foam. Hope this helps.
