That is a decision you should make. Do you want to sell the end product? What are your future plans for the piece? Are cost factors a consideration? Can't help ya. Me, I would have let a 185 pound bear live to grow up.
Yes it is a personal decision. But so is the size of a trophy. My last bear was only 150 lbs. But after watching her for an hour we knew that there were no cubs, also she looked old. The repot back from the DNR in MI. states that she was 13. And in my mind needed culled. We have an excellant population and do not need inferior specimens around when they can be leagaly taken.
I don't think he was asking your permission to kill the bear all he was asking was which way to mount it. There was really no need for that smart remark with the information he gave. Everyone has their own standards on what to shoot. For the younger hunters that would be a trophy or for that matter someone's first bear.
I said it...
Guys pay to go to Canada, last day take a youngin, well they gotta get something for thier money, right? PA has a 3 day season, they go up there and are lucky to see any bears at all, if all they see is a small one, they tend to take it, although some will just wait until next year.
Sounds like it is. That's hard for someone else to tell you. If you have the room and want a lifesize bear, than why not do it. If you have more wall space than floor space than 1/2 lifesize or shoulder mount might be the way to go. If it has a prime pelt, that would have some input into your decision. You might ask your wife/husband for some input. Good luck and enjoy doing it however you decide.
If it was my bear, i'd mount it in some pose or fashion i never did before. Just for the experience! I've never done much altering of forms so i'd probalbly try altering the form and learn a little more on the anatomy of a bear,
Just my humble opinion. good luck to yuh!
next time he could take a scale into the woods with him then he would know how big it is before he shoots..LOL...lighten up
here in penna. we used to have a rule that the front incisor(?) had to be an inch long or you couldn't shoot the bear..HUH
now how would you know if the dang tooth was an inch long, unless you had already shot the bear?
smile please, okay yogi, open wide....BANG BANG it was an inch
some rule...nice bear bmontenero
