OK Joe, I'll try.
There are 2 ways to secure the bases of the quills [that I know of] Personally, I use latex caulking from WalMart. Another way is to pin a strip of batting along the back...about 2" wide or so, from between the wings to the tail. [the caulking goes in the same place]
Either way, it's only the first step. A trick I learned which really helps me is to make 2 little wire fences along each side of the back. They should be just inside the tertials. Take a piece of 12 or 14 ga. wire about [?] 14" long or so. Sharpen both ends and bend them down at right angles about 3" long. Stick them lightly into the form from against the tail forward. This corral will keep the feathers from falling sideways and it makes a big difference. I don't like to put cotton behind the feathers. It will come back to haunt you.
'Hope this helps.

Hey Joe,
Nancy is right on the money - hide paste or linoleum paste works well too...and I've always found that hanging them upside down REALLY helps keep them uniformly spread.
Cheers,
Patrick
