How to hang moose hide on wall?

Submitted by Art Boyne on 5/5/01. ( aboyne@earthlink.net ) 63.14.32.4

A couple of years ago, I harvested a cow moose and had the hide tanned (hair on). Now, I'd like to hang the hide on the wall of
of my study. What's the best method? I plan to have it as a
permanent hanging display.

Moose Hanging

Art,
Eric is correct in the rings, but sometime hides of this size (a small moose is still a BIG moose), the ring method sometimes causes wrinkles and doesn't lay flat. This can be eliminated by taking whatever you decide will be the top edge and laying it out on a sheet of luan plywood. If you don't want the whole hide "boarded", trace the top edge outline and then shadow it about 3 to 4 inches deep. Contact this to the cape and staple it with hidden staples. Now install the ring type hangers to match the studs in you wall and the hide will lay perfectly flat when you hang it up.
